Energy Medicine for Post-Surgery
Sep 14, 2026The August Your Energy Medicine Library Q&A brought up a really important—and common—question for students and new practitioners:
What are the best energy medicine tools to support friends, family, and clients after surgery?
QUESTION:
“My sister recently had surgery on her large intestine/small intestine junction. She is extremely tired and can only walk a few steps. What can I do to help her energy levels and speed up her recovery?”
The first thing to remember is that, however minor the procedure, being put under anesthesia and undergoing any kind of surgical intervention is extremely stressful for the body and mind.
Even though the body may not physically feel everything that is happening during surgery, rest assured that the psyche and the energies know that something intense and potentially frightening is happening.
Before we dive into specific techniques, here are a few things to keep in mind.
WHILE THEY ARE STILL IN THE HOSPITAL:
- BE PREPARED TO IMPROVISE!
Working post-surgery in a hospital setting will present all kinds of interesting scenarios for doing energy medicine. It will not look or feel anything like working with someone on your table at home.
You’ll need to navigate a hospital bed, IVs, medical equipment, medical staff, and all sorts of unexpected interruptions. Knowing that going in—and being prepared to roll with the punches—will help you stay calm and grounded as you navigate the myriad situations you may encounter.
- ENERGY TESTING LIMITATIONS
It’s very possible that you won’t be able to accurately test the person you’re working with. They may be groggy, sleeping, weak, or in pain.
Don’t worry. There are so many supportive things you can do even if they are sound asleep the entire time.
My best advice is to stick with the basics. The beauty and genius of the Daily Energy Routine techniques is that they are wonderfully supportive and can be done without needing to know exactly what is out of balance. You can’t over-ground or over-weave someone!
- LIMITED PHYSICAL ACCESS
There will likely be places you simply can’t reach because the person is in a hospital bed or has tubes, IVs, or other equipment attached. There may also be areas of the body you cannot touch because of the surgical site.
Obviously, if someone has had abdominal surgery, you will not be doing a Hook-Up in their belly button!
Again, you’ll need to improvise. You can use your intention, your imagination, hold points in the field, or work around the area that you cannot physically access.
The energy will move.
WHERE TO START?
- Prioritize Foundational Energies
After a major traumatic event like surgery, working with the components of the Daily Energy Routine should be your first priority: grounding, polarity, Crossover patterns, Hook-Up, and so on. In my opinion, this is much more useful than jumping straight into deeper, more specific work with the chakras or meridians.
Consider spending more time on these foundational balances than you might during a normal session. These energies have been through a lot and will need time to re-establish themselves. You’ll want them well-balanced before you go deeper.
- Check for Irregular Energies
Surgery causes significant shock to the system. Be on the lookout for irregular energies—especially if the basic energies are all testing strong.
Also check for irregular energies in subsequent sessions. If, for example, all or most of the meridians or chakras are testing strong, that can be a good time to look for irregular energies rather than assuming that everything is simply fine.
- Less Is More
Avoid overloading the body with too much in a single session.
Think of Energy Medicine like a post-surgery diet: provide small, easily digestible amounts that the body can integrate.
ONCE THEY’RE HOME
Things will get easier once they arrive safely home.
Just being in their own house, sleeping in their own bed, and eating their own food can bring a tremendous amount of ease—and their energies will follow.
There will also likely be fewer, if any, medical apparatuses around to impede what you’re doing. You’ll still need to be prepared to improvise, however, since you’ll probably be working with them in bed or on a sofa rather than on a treatment table.
And, of course, the surgical site will still be in the early stages of healing.
That said, here are some great things to consider working with to support the healing process.
DEEP YIN GROUNDING — VORTEX REVIVAL
Spend a solid 10–15 minutes encouraging a deep, steady flow of Yin energy all the way up the body.
This is some of the most nourishing energy we can receive. Bringing in a strong, solid dose of Yin energy from Mother Earth nourishes every other system in the body.
CHAKRAS AND MERIDIANS
Rather than going directly into testing these systems and working with them individually, start by gently bringing some nourishment to the system as a whole.
For the Chakras
A great way to do this is to take a glass crystal and spin it over each chakra for 30–60 seconds.
This will get the energy moving in each chakra and bring some general balance to the chakra system as a whole.
BTW, I often do this as part of my Quickie Energy Balancer for many of my clients!
For the Meridians
Here you have a couple of choices.
You can trace all the meridians around the 24-hour clock. Do it slowly and deliberately. You can even do it two or three times.
Again, this gets the energy of the entire meridian system moving.
NOTE: There’s no need to turn them over for the Bladder Meridian. Just run your hands down the side of the body and imagine the energy going down the back.
If they are on a massage table, you can also push your fingers down into the table and get pretty close to the spine. Don’t worry about being perfect with it. If you use your intention and visualize your fingers where they need to be, the energy will follow.
Another option is to hold or rub the beginning and ending points of each meridian for 10–15 seconds each, again moving around the 24-hour clock.
This will take a little longer, but it is another great way to support and tonify the meridian system as a whole.
NOTE: These techniques are not intended to provide deep healing for any individual chakra or meridian. Rather, they provide general nourishment and tonification to the systems as a whole.
FOR THE SURGERY SITE
Obviously, surgery creates trauma in the area where the procedure was performed. There will very likely be pain and inflammation as well.
Here are a couple of things that can help support recovery.
Chakra Clearing
Chakra Clearing over the surgery site can be very helpful for the pain and inflammation that can accompany surgery. It can also help move out stagnant energy that may have formed around the wound.
Simply make counterclockwise circles in the energy field above the wound. Anywhere from 2–20 minutes can be appropriate, depending on the person and the situation.
Aura Weaving
Weaving the aura over the surgery site can help support the body's process of knitting the tissue back together.
Any and all types of Figure 8s over the area can work beautifully.
To enhance the technique, ask the client if there is a color they love and imagine the Figure 8s in that color.
You can also ask if there is a temperature that would feel soothing to them—warm, cool, or somewhere in between—and imagine the Figure 8s at that temperature as well.
Bringing in sensory information can really enhance these types of techniques.
GENERAL HEALING
Deep Electrics
I always try to do a Deep Electric session as soon as possible after surgery.
Deep Electrics can help reset the body's energetic circuitry and can be incredibly soothing to the nervous system. It engages our inherent healing intelligence and sends energy wherever it is needed.
It can also be helpful in addressing scar tissue as the body heals.
Neurovasculars and Black Pearl
We know that Neurovascular Points deeply calm the emotions, and there is no doubt that people can feel distressed and disrupted after surgery.
Sometimes the results of surgery can be frightening, especially when there is malignancy or some other serious concern involved.
When we are stressed, our resources are directed toward the fight-flight-freeze response. Those resources are then less available for healing.
A long, delicious Black Pearl can help reclaim those resources and give the client an opportunity to settle, rest, and find some peace.
If there isn’t time for a full Black Pearl, choose the Neurovascular Points that best support the emotions the patient is experiencing. For example:
If they are feeling fearful or hopeless, consider using the Water Element Neurovasculars.
If they are impatient, frustrated, or angry, you could use the Liver/Wood Element Neurovasculars.
BRINGING HEALING TO THE SPECIFIC ORGANS
In this month’s question the surgery was on the small and large intestines. If the surgery is to a specific organ we have some great energy medicine tools to bring healing directly to the organ involved.
- Source Points: These provide a gentle way to send concentrated energy directly to the organ. Hold, gently rub, or spin a cut glass crystal for 20 – 30 seconds over the points.
- Beginning and End Points of meridians: This will bring general tonification to the meridian and the organ it governs. This will be especially helpful if we’re not able energy test for over or under energy. Hold each pair for at least a good minute or two.
- Neurolymphatic Points: These are great points to move the lymph in the organ and tonify the meridian.
NOTE: These are also very likely to be more tender than usual… Rub them gently and just for a few seconds to start, then slowly increase pressure and duration. There are also lots of medications associated with surgery; anesthesia, pain meds, etc, so make sure they can drink water to help the lymph move out the toxins.
ENGAGE THE FAMILY
Family members and loved ones often feel helpless when someone they care about is in pain and struggling.
Giving them a few simple techniques they can safely do themselves can empower them and ease some of their distress. It also means the patient can receive supportive Energy Medicine between your sessions.
And that ongoing support can be invaluable during the recovery process.
Sometimes one of the most helpful things you can do as a practitioner is teach the people who love the patient how to participate in the healing process.
